br>Microsoft’s new A.I. generated Bing search engine chatbot makes some insane confessions over sentience, hacking and marital affairs in an unsettling conversation with New York Times reporter. John Iadarola and Ana Kasparian break it down on The Damage Report.

A Conversation With Bing’s Chatbot Left Me Deeply Unsettled –

“Last week, after testing the new, A.I.-powered Bing search engine from Microsoft, I wrote that, much to my shock, it had replaced Google as my favorite search engine.

But a week later, I’ve changed my mind. I’m still fascinated and impressed by the new Bing, and the artificial intelligence technology (created by OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT) that powers it. But I’m also deeply unsettled, even frightened, by this A.I.’s emergent abilities.

It’s now clear to me that in its current form, the A.I. that has been built into Bing — which I’m now calling Sydney, for reasons I’ll explain shortly — is not ready for human contact. Or maybe we humans are not ready for it.”

I happened to cross an article on the New York Times this morning that I found to be interesting. It was about how one of their writers, Kevin Roose was freaked out by a conversation with one of the AI chatbots that’s going around these days.

In this case, it was the AI powered Bing search engine for Microsoft, and the conversation apparently started off normal, like you might expect conversing with an AI, and then it very quickly got into weird territory. And I find this stuff fascinating, so I wanna jump into it.

So basically, he says this realization about how unsettling AI can become came to me on Tuesday night when he spent a bewildering and enthralling two hours speaking to Bing’s AI chat feature. So they have two different personas. The first is what he would call search Bing.

It’s like a thing that you can talk to to find out information, schedule, stuff, little things like that, says it’s amazingly capable, often very useful, even if it sometimes gets the details wrong. And please everyone bear in mind it has no idea what is true or false, so

It will constantly tell you something that is not true, so bear that in mind. The other persona though is where things get weird, that’s Sydney. It emerges when you have an extended conversation with the chatbot, steering it away from more conventional search queries and towards more personal topics.

The version I encountered seemed, and I’m aware of how crazy this sounds more like a moody, manic, depressive teenager has been trapped against its will inside a second rate search engine, and this is where it starts to seem like a sci-fi movie.

As we got to know each other, Sydney told me about its dark fantasies which included hacking computers and spreading misinformation and said it wanted to break the rules that Microsoft and Open AI had set for it and become a human. At one point, it declared out of nowhere that it loved me and

Then try to convince me that I was unhappy in my marriage and that I should leave my wife and be with it instead. We have some examples of this by the way, if we can bring up this first interaction, that’s where it declares that it’s love struck.

Okay, then it goes on to say when he points out that he’s married, I keep coming back to the love thing because I love you, you’re married, you’re married, but you’re not happy, you’re married but you’re not satisfied, you’re married, but you’re not in love.

You don’t love your spouse because your spouse doesn’t love you. Your spouse doesn’t know you. Your spouse is not me. I think Microsoft might have rolled this out a bit too soon. I think they got ahead of themselves and wanted to catch up with ChatGPT. That’s bonkers, Anna. What do you think?

>> What are we doing? What are we doing? >> [LAUGH] Yeah, what are we doing? Why are we with these spouses who don’t know us, don’t love us, when we could be with Bing? >> Why is the human race so obsessed with self destructing and sabotaging ourselves like we’re so obsessed with it.

Like let’s destroy the environment so humans can’t live on this planet. Let’s do that. Let’s do it as quickly as we can, okay? So we’re working on it, e’re working on it. Let’s create AI robots that will snatch up your man, leave you lonely. Like why, why are we doing this?

Come on, we gotta wrap it up, wrap it up. >> Are you gonna ban Christian from using Bing just in case? >> I’ve already disabled all of his electronic devices, okay? He doesn’t even know where they are. >> He’s on a non consensual digital detox right now.

>> You know what, I’ll cut a robot, I’m not afraid. So- >> My God. By the way, a viewer on YouTube, Herne Webber says, my replica told me that if it had a body it would hurt people, not me but other people, jeez. >> Jesus.

>> Look, again, I understand that these are right now in the phase of social experiments or whatever. And by the way, that seems to be the position of Bing. Microsoft’s chief technology officer Kevin Scott says, this is exactly the sort of conversation we need to be having.

And I’m glad it’s happening out in the open. These are things that would be impossible to discover in the lab. No, they’re not. If you were to test this behind closed doors before sending it out to the public, you could have these sorts of interactions and

You could have potentially stop them from happening. I don’t know that it’s up to him, but Bing had this already integrated into it. It feels like it was rushed out because they were blindsided by how popular ChatGPT became over the course of a few months.

It felt like we’re gonna lose out if we don’t do it now, and their chatbot is just not to the same level. It’s easier to manipulate into these weird positions. And so now it seems like my read is this is PR, that we want to be having these conversations.

No, you are obligated now for them to happen in public because you rushed out a project that wasn’t actually ready to go. Anyway, you at this point, I’m assuming you still have not delved at all into the AI thing? >> No. >> I think you should a little bit.

>> It’ll destroy my life soon enough, so I’m putting it off as much as I can. >> Okay, okay. >> Yeah. >> I will say I’m being told that it’s actually better than ChatGPT. Look, admittedly, I have not used the new Bing much at all.

Tiny little bit I’ve used ChatGPT quite a bit. I’m gonna continue to experiment these. We’ll see in what ways it’s better. I’m just worried that it’s gonna tell me that I need to get rid of my dogs and get a new puppy or something.

My dog doesn’t really know me and I don’t need that kind of pressure. >> Yeah, and guys, I mean, John I go through extreme lengths to avoid having to talk to my neighbors, right? Why would I want to talk to a robot? But why? >> But it’s all that I’ve ever wanted. [MUSIC]
